A Flat on the Grain Trailer Stopped My Whole Harvest. The Lug Nuts the Shop Ran On Would Not Come Off for Any Tool I Owned.
Beans running perfect, a full hopper behind me, and I spent the best hour of the day on my knees in the gravel losing to six lug nuts.
There is one job on a farm that will not wait for you, and that is harvest. The bin is empty, the moisture is right, the forecast says rain Thursday, and every hour of good weather is money on the ground. So of course that is exactly when the grain trailer picked up a flat, loaded, at the field entrance, with the combine sitting full behind it. I have changed a hundred tires in my life. This one stopped me cold, because the lug nuts would not break loose for anything I had on the truck.
My name is Marlin. My grandad broke this ground, my dad farmed it, and I have run corn and beans on it for going on forty years in western Iowa. I am not a mechanic in the shop sense, but there is not much on this place I have not fixed in a field with what was in the truck box. - The four-way. Both hands, then a knee on it, then a boot. The trailer rocked and the four-way flexed and not one nut turned a hair.
- The breaker bar with a pipe over it. I have snapped a breaker bar standing on one before, and I came close again. All the leverage in the world does you no good when you cannot plant yourself and the whole rig lifts before the nut breaks.
- My cordless impact. A good half inch gun, and on a shop nut it would not even come close to busting them loose. It rattled and gave up.
- The tire service. The co-op truck was three farms ahead of me and every rig in the county had a flat that same week. Hours out, maybe the next morning, with a loaded trailer parked in my own gateway and the combine shut down behind it.
- Standing there doing the arithmetic on a stopped combine while the good weather burned off the field. That is the number that actually hurt.
What a stopped wheel really costs in October
Put the real cost on the table, because on a farm it is not a tow bill. It is the combine sitting idle with the header full. It is the beans shattering a little more every hour the sun is on them. It is the truck that should be running to the elevator sitting in the gateway instead, and the driver behind it with nothing to haul. A flat tire is a twenty minute job. A flat tire you cannot get the wheel off of, in the middle of harvest, is a day you do not get back, on a crop the weather is not going to hold for you.
And it is not only the wheel that comes off. I have seen a neighbor lose a rim to elongated bolt holes because a nut worked loose and nobody caught it, on a trailer that never should have left the yard that way. When these wheels go bad, they go bad at the worst mile of the worst day. That is why the man who hauls takes them serious, and why being stopped by them stings the way it does.
Everything the truck carried, laid out beat in the gravel. The nuts were not rusted. They were sitting at whatever number the shop gun left on them.
Then an old tire man put a gearbox in my hands
Verl is seventy-four. He ran the tire and service truck for our co-op for forty years, which means he hung most of the wheels in this township at one time or another and pulled off the ones that went flat. When I told him about my gateway he did not laugh at me and he did not tell me to try harder. He reached behind the seat of his pickup and handed me a short steel gearbox about the size of a coffee can, with a square drive on the nose, a folding reaction arm, and a little crank handle.
Planetary gears inside, sixteen to one. You seat the socket on the nut, you brace the reaction arm against the ground or the next lug over so the strain runs through steel and not through your spine, and you turn the crank with two fingers. If you pull a loaded trailer, a shop has hung your wheels at a number no man can undo by hand, and the flat is coming. It will not pick the yard on a rainy day when there is nothing to do. It will pick the field entrance in good weather with the combine full behind you, or the road shoulder with a load of calves in the heat. When it comes, you can lose the afternoon to it, or you can seat a socket, brace the arm, and turn a crank with two fingers.
