You Can Launch That Boat in Four Minutes Flat. Now Try Taking One Lug Nut Off Its Trailer.
A fisherman who pulled over behind us took this through his window and texted it to me. The boat was perfect. The battery was charged, the plugs were new, the livewell pump was tested. And we were parked on the shoulder of US-431 over one lug nut.
Every man I fish with runs the same list I do. Batteries on the tender all winter. Fuel treated in the fall. New plugs in the spring, impeller on schedule, lights checked at the ramp. The boat gets maintained like it flies passengers. Then the whole rig rolls down the highway on four trailer tires, and I am going to ask you the question nobody at the marina ever asked me.

Not whether you carry a spare. I carried a spare. Whether you can break the lug nuts loose with what rides in your truck. It can leave those nuts far, far tighter than anything the wrench in your truck can handle, and then they sit through a season of loaded miles and highway heat, seating in harder the whole time. The boat above them gets waxed. The nuts under them wait.
So understand this before you blame your arms or your age. That nut was not tightened by a man. There is no shame in failing to out-pull a machine.
Everything in the truck had a go. Here is how each one did.
- The lug wrench that lives behind the seat. I pulled until the trailer rocked against the jack and my vision went spotty. The nut did not move a degree.
- The four way cross wrench. Both hands, full body weight, boots set in the gravel. Nothing, six times in a row.
- Standing on the wrench. On a gravel shoulder, with a loaded boat trailer swaying next to traffic, that is a good way to get hurt, and the nut still sat there.
- The breaker bar. Fine tool in a garage with room to swing and concrete under your feet. On the shoulder, half under a trailer fender, the swing lifts the trailer instead of turning the nut.
- The phone. The mobile tire man was two lakes away on a Saturday in June. Two hundred and forty dollars for the call, and the better part of my fishing day gone before his truck ever showed.
What that one nut actually costs a boat owner
Put the real cost on the table. Two hundred and forty dollars for a service call to do eight seconds of work. A launch window gone, and if you fish tournaments, a blast-off you paid an entry fee for. The spare you bought, mounted and aired up, riding along useless. And the part that stayed with me longest, sitting in the truck with Nadine while the man with the gun did in one minute what I could not do at all, on a trailer I thought I had prepared for exactly this.
I spent forty years measuring things for a living. The one thing I never measured was whether my own two hands could still service the trailer under my own boat.
