Pam took this from the porch. Thirty-one years selling every part of a brake job over the counter, and one piston had me beat in my own driveway.
My daughter Katie called on a Tuesday with a quote in her hand. Seven hundred and eighty dollars for rear pads and rotors on her Equinox. - The big C-clamp with the old pad, my father's trick. Pressed the inboard piston in, watched the outboard piston slide out to meet me. Traded them back and forth for forty minutes.
- Channel locks across the caliper. Got maybe half travel, cocked to one side, then slipped off and took a bite out of my knuckle on the bracket.
- A pry bar against the rotor before I pulled the caliper. Old trick, and it does move pistons. It also loads the whole prying force through one edge of the piston.

Do the arithmetic the shops hope you never do.
